My approach to working with clients is person-centered, compassionate, safe, empowering, and respectful of the client’s diversity, story, and stage of change.  I try to see the client’s reality through his/her eyes, and offer a space and presence that is warm, validating, and supportive of growth and change.

My view of human nature is holistic, taking into consideration the body, mind, and spirit.  My approach is grounded in the following theories:
  • Gestalt Therapy
  • Body Psychotherapy
  • Family Constellations
  • Mindfulness
  • Therapeutic Hypnosis
  • Jungian Psychology
  • Art and Movement Therapies
  • Work with Dreams (Gestalt, Jungian, Shamanic)

A person is shaped by biology, family, society, tradition, culture, spirituality, environment, and the wider collective field.  In the formation of a sense of self (particularly during infancy and childhood), the reaction of others provides a mirror that teaches us who we are and what we can expect in the world.  If, for example, a child's reaching out to his/her caregiver is met with care and love, this interaction supports the development of a child who is transparent to the self and has healthy self-esteem.  Imagine what happens if the caregiver is too tired, busy, or sick to attend to the child.  What if the caregiver is angry and punishes the child?  What if the child is abused?  When the spontaneous behaviour of the child is not met with love and receptivity, the natural development of the self is interrupted.  The child begins to internalize the messages he/she is receiving from the environment, and in order to ensure his/her survival, begins to conceal the spontaneous expression of the self.  This marks the beginning of a departure from who the person really is, and over time brings about inner/outer conflict and suffering.

If departure from the true self brings about conflict and suffering, a reconnection with the authentic self will bring about change and healing.  This process of reconnection happens through awareness in the present moment. The present moment is the major reality we work with in counselling – the immediate relational and process reality as it unfolds in the here and now.  It is only in the present moment that we access our lived experience, and it is only in the present moment where the experience of healing can take place.  Awareness means being here fully with all of one’s body, mind and soul, and open to all possibilities.  Awareness itself is the curative factor in therapy as it allows the client to reveal his/her own unique personal truth to him/herself and the therapist through a process of self-discovery and self-revelation. Because this truth is lived truth, it can readily lead to transformative changes in how the client feels, thinks, and acts – which is the ultimate aim of therapy.
